Powerful cell chemistry meets intelligent software
The EQS marks the launch of a new generation of batteries with significantly higher energy density. It has a usable energy content of around 107.8 kWh. The innovative battery management software, developed in-house, allows updates over the air (OTA). In this way, the energy management system remains up to date throughout the life cycle. In terms of the cell chemistry, the cobalt content of the cathodes has been reduced to ten percent.
With ranges up to 782 kilometres (WLTP), the drive of the EQS also meets every expectation of a progressive saloon in the S-Class segment.
In terms of recuperation, too, the EQS is excellent: of the maximum deceleration in the DAuto recuperation program of 5 m/s², up to 3 m/s² is achieved by recuperation (2 m/s² by the service brakes). This allows deceleration to a standstill without using the brake pedal, while at the same time the range benefits from this recuperation strategy and the high recuperation power (up to 290 kW). Deceleration is also applied to detected vehicles ahead until they come to a standstill, for example at traffic lights. Intelligent recuperation is situation-optimised with the aid of ECO Assist and acts with foresight, taking into account traffic conditions or topography, among other things. The driver can additionally set three recuperation levels and the gliding function via shift paddles on the steering wheel.
The EQS 450+ allows the alternating current charging system supporting up to 11 kW and drect current charging system supporting up to 200 kW. As a standard a charging cable will be given for wall box or public charging stations, measuring at five meters. The EQS 450+ for the first-time, features rear-axle steering for manoeuvring made easier, the AIRMATIC package, and adding to the technological advancements, suspensions with adaptive damping system.
The luxury electric sedan will also include DYNAMIC SELECT and the Pedestrian protection bringing the car to a halt when sensors pick up pedestrian movement in its path. Safety does not only include the car and driver but also the safety of pedestrians. Since there is no engine sound to alert a pedestrian of your presence, the car is fitted with an Acoustic presence indicator so that your electric vehicle does not pose a danger to pedestrians and bike riders when driving virtually silently. The acoustic presence indicator generates specific Mercedes-Benz sounds outside of the vehicle up to a speed of approx. 30 km/h. As part of this it differentiates between driving forwards and reversing.
As an exceptionally intelligent vehicle, the EQS has up to 350 sensors, depending on the equipment. These record distances, speeds and accelerations, lighting conditions, precipitation and temperatures, seat occupancy as well as the driver's blink of an eye or the passengers' speech. This wealth of information is processed by control units that, controlled by algorithms, make decisions at lightning speed. So they are the brain, so to speak. The new EQS can expand its capabilities based on new experiences, because it is highly capable of learning thanks to artificial intelligence (AI).
Intelligent support while driving
At Mercedes-Benz, safety has always been at the forefront of everything we do. The EQS 450+ comes with the Driving Assistance Plus Package including Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, Evasive manoeuvre support, PRE-SAFE® impulse side and Rear sensors for the lane departure assistant.
For even greater assistance, the EQS 450+ will have the URBAN GUARD vehicle protection featuring an Anti-theft alarm system, and an Interior monitoring system accessible through the Mercedes-Benz app. The Parking Package includes a 360-degree camera ad brings with it the Active Parking Assist with the vehicle also including the Mirror package for the Interior mirror and driver's exterior mirror to automatically dim, Electrically folding exterior mirrors and of course Ambient lighting with projection of the Mercedes-Benz brand logo.
The EQS 450+ will have the standard Tyre pressure monitoring system, TIREFIT along with Window airbags and Knee airbags for a higher safety standard. The vehicle also includes the PRE-SAFE® system, beltbag and the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system.
Extensive personalisation and exceptionally intelligent
Our biggest advancement in visual technology is exemplified here with the debut of the MBUX Hyperscreen. Featuring a fingerprint scanner, the MBUX multimedia system and an OLED front passenger display, the MBUX Hyperscreen is one of the main highlights in the EQS 450+. The MBUX Hyperscreen is surrounded by a continuous plastic front frame. Its visible part is painted in an elaborate three-layer process in "Silver Shadow". This coating system achieves a particularly high-quality surface impression due to extremely thin intermediate layers. The integrated ambient lighting installed in the lower part of the MBUX Hyperscreen makes the display unit appear to float on the instrument panel.
The passenger also has its own display and operating area, which makes travel more pleasant and entertaining. With up to seven profiles, it is possible to customize the content. However, the entertainment functions of the passenger display are only available during the journey within the framework of the country-specific legal regulations. If the passenger seat is not occupied, the screen becomes a digital decorative part. In this case, animated stars, i.e. the Mercedes-Benz Pattern, are displayed.
For a particularly brilliant image, OLED technology is used in central and passenger displays. This is where the individual image points are self-luminous; non-controlled image pixels remain switched off, which means that they appear deep black. The active OLED pixels, on the other hand, radiate with high color brilliance, resulting in high contrast values, regardless of the angle of view and the lighting conditions.
This electrifying display appearance goes hand in hand with emotionally appealing visualisation. All the graphics are styled in a new blue/orange colour scheme throughout. The classic cockpit display with two circular instruments has been reinterpreted with a digital laser sword in a glass lens.
Thanks to its clear screen design with anchor points, the MBUX Hyperscreen is intuitive and easy to operate. An example of this is the display style EV mode. Important functions of the electric drive such as boost or recuperation are visualized in a new way, with a spatially moving clasp, and thus made tangible. A lens-shaped object moves between these clamps. It follows gravity and thus depicts the G-Force forces impressively and emotionally.
The EQS 450+ is more than just a car, it is your personal assistant with the MBUX Interior Assistant both in the front and rear and the MBUX Navigation Premium allowing extended MBUX functions. The EQS 450+ also includes the MBUX augmented reality for navigation, MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment System, 2 wireless headsets, Pre-installation for Remote and Navigation Services, Smartphone Integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The all-round sound experience in the EQS also makes the paradigm shift from a conventional to an electric car audible. A variety of soundscapes allows for an individual acoustic set-up. In combination with the Burmester® 3D surround sound system, the EQS features the two soundscapes Silver Waves and Vivid Flux. As Sound Experiences they can be selected or switched off on the central display. Another soundscape can be unlocked using over-the-air technology. The interactive driving sound, which is reproduced via the sound system's speakers in the interior, also moves within the respective sound world.
Further reducing the carbon footprint with green power
As part of its "Ambition 2039" initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now. The company aims to go all electric by the end of the decade where market conditions allow. In many areas, Mercedes is already thinking about tomorrow today: the new EQS is designed to be correspondingly sustainable. The vehicles are produced in a carbon-neutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used. This is because Mercedes-Benz considers the entire value chain, from development and the supplier network to its own production. Mercedes-Benz AG has had its climate protection targets confirmed by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI).
