More power, less consumption.

Our EQ Power models with plug-in hybrid drive link the best of both worlds: the dynamism and efficiency of an electric motor with the range of a combustion engine. You can move about in all-electric mode in city traffic, recharge the vehicle at home as well as at public charging stations and benefit from the usual convenience of short refuelling stops on long journeys.

Charging socket

The high-voltage lithium-ion battery can be charged externally via a charging socket on the right-hand side of the rear bumper.

Thanks to an intelligent on-board charging system, you can charge the battery at a wallbox, at a conventional domestic socket or at one of the public charging points that are becoming an increasingly common sight.

HV lithium-ion battery

Depending on the model, a fully charged battery covers a fully
electric range of over 30 km with zero local emissions.

Hybrid transmission including electric motor

The electric motor and an additional decoupler between the combustion engine and electric motor are completely integrated into the hybrid head of the standard-specification 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission.

Internal combustion engine

Depending on the model, four- or six-cylinder petrol engines are combined with hybrid modules and batteries with different performance ratings.

When required, the output of the combustion engine is supported by the electric motor – for an extra boost when accelerating. The result is performance that combines driving pleasure and comfort with minimal consumption and low emissions.

Recuperative brake system

Recuperation allows energy to be recovered when decelerating and braking.

The greatest potential for consumption reduction in hybrid drive systems lies in the maximisation of energy recovery when decelerating and braking. When you press down on the brake pedal, the electric motor initially takes on the task of decelerating the vehicle, acting as an alternator.

Comfort, exceptional efficiency or sport – there are five drive programs to choose from, depending on the vehicle:

C drive program (Comfort):

The standard setting is the well-balanced and consumption-optimised Comfort mode.

S drive program (Sport):

More agility and dynamism thanks to a more sporty and stiff steering and suspension setup (for AIRMATIC), spontaneous throttle response and changed gearshift times (for 7G-TRONIC PLUS).

S+ drive program (Sport Plus):

In Sport Plus mode you can push sporty characteristics even further in conjunction with AIRMATIC. Chassis, suspension and drivetrain are calibrated even more dynamically and the ECO start/stop function is additionally deactivated.

E drive program (Economy):

Designed to achieve fuel consumption values that are as low as possible by employing measures such as more subtle engine responses, early upshifts (for 7G-TRONIC PLUS) and modified seat heating, rear window heating and air conditioning output. In conjunction with hybrid technology the mode supports the so-called "Overrun mode" and "Overrun mode+": once drivers take their foot off the accelerator, the vehicle uses its own kinetic energy and coasts along while saving fuel.

Drive program I (Individual):

Gives drivers the option to vary steering, drivetrain and chassis set-up as required – from efficient to comfortable and sporty. Modes are easily and conveniently selected using the configuration menu in the head unit.

Individual, parameters, such as the ECO start/stop function or the ride height, can be individually adapted as part of preconfigured drive programs. Once again changing the drive program restores the configuration saved for the corresponding mode.

Operating modes

Operating modes

Operating modes in the plug-in hybrid.

The selected operating mode is displayed in the plug-in hybrid's instrument cluster.

Intelligent drive management automatically selects the ideal combination of combustion engine and electric motor to generate energy as efficiently as possible and achieve a maximum range. However, you can also individually switch between operating modes.

Depending on the drive program, four operating modes are available:

Hybrid: all hybrid functions such as electric mode, boost and recuperation are available and are automatically deployed according to the driving situation and the route to ensure the lowest possible consumption.

E-MODE: for driving on electric power only – for example in city centres or because the HV lithium-ion battery is sufficiently charged for the remainder of the route.

E-SAVE: the charge level of the HV lithium-ion battery is maintained – for driving on electric power only at a later point in the journey. Electric mode is therefore only available to a limited extent.

CHARGE: charges the HV lithium-ion battery via the combustion engine during the journey. Electric mode is not available here.

Route-based operating-mode strategy

Route-based operating-mode strategy

Looking ahead while on the move.

The route-based operating-mode strategy comprehensively yet discreetly supports you in driving with maximum efficiency. The system is responsible for organising ideal operating mode sequences by using the COMAND Online navigation system data. When a destination is input, the charge/discharge level of the HV lithium-ion battery is controlled for optimum energy use over the entire course of the journey.

In this way the feature helps to ensure you reach city limits with a full battery wherever possible, so you can efficiently handle stop-and-go traffic and drive electrically as frequently as possible. Outside city limits, the route-based operating-mode strategy means lithium-ion high-voltage batteries are always optimally charged for the remaining journey.

Haptic accelerator pedal

Tangibly more efficient driving.

Haptic accelerator pedal

Tangibly more efficient driving.

The haptic accelerator pedal makes changing operating mode easier: when you feel a pressure point in the accelerator pedal during electric driving in E-MODE, you have called up the maximum available electrical power. If you continue pressing the accelerator, the combustion engine will kick in. The ECO Assistant uses a double pulse to signal that, in this given driving situation, you should take your foot off the accelerator in order to switch off the combustion engine.

Recuperation and 'gliding' (overrun mode)

Brake to gain: energy.

Increased electrical range thanks to recuperation: when you decelerate by taking your foot off the accelerator (overrun mode) or braking, the electric motor acts as an alternator and generates braking torque at the wheels. The recuperated electric energy flows back into the battery, increasing the charge level.

Increased electrical range thanks to recuperation: when you decelerate by taking your foot off the accelerator (overrun mode) or braking, the electric motor acts as an alternator and generates braking torque at the wheels. The recuperated electric energy flows back into the battery, increasing the charge level.

The following four recuperation levels are available:

D+: Overrun mode, no recuperation
D: Moderate recuperation
D–: High recuperation
DAuto: recuperation depends on the traffic situation

In so-called overrun mode the engine is entirely switched off and disengaged to save even more energy. The vehicle continues to roll without any friction loss caused by the combustion engine.

The energy flow within a plug-in hybrid vehicle is illustrated on the media display.

Especially efficient energy recovery, with a subsequently greater driving range, is made possible by the optionally available radar-based regenerative braking system. This system uses the data from the radar sensors of COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS to either increase or fully reduce energy recovery and therefore the deceleration, as required.
