The Asian finalists won the final challenge of the prestigious MercedesTrophy World Final 2006 golf tournament held in Stuttgart, Germany, recently. This is the 7th time that the Asian team has won the Nation cup since the start of the world finals since 1989.
The MercedesTrophy is an exclusive series of golf tournaments to keep in touch with owners and is held as part of DaimlerChrysler´s customer care program. Worldwide, there are about 540 MercedesTrophy invitation tournaments which result in over 50,000 direct and active contacts with customers.
This international series is played worldwide in a three stage system – the series starts with invitation tournaments at a local level where players can qualify for the next national final of the country in question or the regional final. The climax of the series is then the world final in September which for years has been held traditionally in and around Stuttgart, the “cradle of the automobile”. This venue, of course, underlines the close relations between the brand Mercedes-Benz and golf.
In total, 69 out of 50,000 participants worldwide (23 teams from 32 nations), fought their way to the world final. The world champion of the World Final 2006 is an East Asia team which consists of three players namely Manirajan Suppiah and Teoh Yang Meng from Malaysia, and Hwang Fumi from Taiwan. This winning combination, which also won the Nation Cup, beat its nearest competitors from United Kingdom and China, respectively.
The players to qualify for the world final are those who have won the tournaments in their national or regional finals. The international character of the MercedesTrophy can be seen in its wide range of participants as every year, finalists from 32 different nations travel to Stuttgart for the world final. |
