The New R-Class

with enhanced versatility and appeal

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class continues to set trends as this exceptional automotive concept combines the acknowledged strengths of several vehicle classes. Exemplary touring comfort, superlative handling dynamics, a high level of adaptability, extremely spacious accommodation, including a vast luggage compartment, coupled with expressive design and hallmark Mercedes safety – the new R-Class leaves very little to be desired.

Even greater interior adaptability, rear-wheel drive, new engine variant and new, even more striking styling – the Mercedes-Benz R 280 L now opens up even more possibilities. The interior now allows scope for new seating arrangements and the line-up, which includes the familiar configurations with up to six individual seats, has been augmented to include a seven-seat variant. For the first time, the new Mercedes-Benz R 280 L features a second row of seats for three people, providing scope for completely new seating arrangements – normally this touring SUV provides seating for five occupants, however four, six or seven seat configurations are also possible.
In addition, the owner of a Mercedes-Benz R-Class has the benefit of an unbeatably large and versatile load compartment – the long-wheelbase models have a luggage compartment capacity of 1,118 litres. The long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz R Class can carry a maximum of an unparalleled 2,436 litres (longest load-compartment length 2,217 mm). These passenger and load compartment dimensions make the new R-Class the most spacious model in the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger car range. The new Mercedes-Benz R-Class features practical stowage compartments under the load-compartment floor, with a capacity of 51 and 52 litres respectively. These can be used for stowing various items and keeping valuables out of sight.
First-class space and comfort for seven passengers
Measuring 5,157 millimetres from nose to tail, the body of the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class has the dimensions of a luxury saloon but is considerably more spacious inside. This is primarily due to the sophisticated vehicle concept and a dimensional design that has been ingeniously planned right down to the finest detail.

The seat spacing, an important criterion when it comes to freedom of movement and spatial comfort, amounts to 920 millimetres between the first and second rows, equivalent to the level found in luxury saloons. The kneeroom is 175 millimetres and likewise, the figures for headroom (rear: up to 1,027 millimetres) and shoulder room (front 1,530 millimetres, rear up to 1,514 millimetres) take the levels of space and comfort aboard the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class into a new dimension.

The new Mercedes-Benz R-Class caters to active individuals who are keen on sports and recreational activities and who are looking for a versatile car that can adapt to all manner of tasks quickly and easily. The four seats in the rear fold flat individually, allowing the load capacity to be expanded to as much as 2,366 litres (VDA measuring method). Loading and unloading is particularly straightforward, courtesy of the level load floor and the generously proportioned EASY-PACK tailgate.
Pure variability
Now, holiday trips with five people and their entire luggage on board are handled with ease. The second seat row not only has space for three fully-grown adults, but will also alternatively accommodate no less than three child seats or child restraint systems. The range of child seats offered by Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH has just the right solution for any age group. The outer seats are equipped with ISOFIX attachment points. All the seats are fitted with three-point seat belts and the passive safety system is further enhanced with front sidebags. If only four persons are travelling and the rear seat in the centre is not required, it can be turned into a comfortable centre armrest in just a few simple moves. In addition, two individual seats can be added at the rear to transform the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class into a 5+2-seater. Despite the new seating arrangement in the centre of the vehicle, convenience functions such as fore/aft adjustment and EASY ENTRY, which facilitates access to the rear seats are retained. All the seats in the rear can be folded down individually to provide a larger transport capacity, creating a completely flat loading area from the front seat backrests to the tailgate. Loading is an easy matter thanks to the low loading sill height of 695 millimetres.
Attractive exterior exudes confidence
The new Mercedes-Benz R 280 L not only boasts new interior features, and on the outside as well, the AMG-styled Sports Tourer is distinguishable by an even more striking bodystyling package at the front and rear, circular fog lamps and 18-inch 5-twinspoke light-alloy wheels.
Complete range
The engine line-up is augmented by the new V6 petrol powerplant in the Mercedes-Benz R 280 L, which shines with its impressive power delivery and moderate fuel consumption. The new Mercedes-Benz R 280 L comes with a 3.0 litre engine, which gives 170 kW/231 hp and a torque of 300Nm at 2,500 – 5,000rpm, thus propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and consumes a mere 10.9 litres of premium unleaded per 100 km (NEDC combined figure). All the Mercedes-Benz R-Class models are specified with the innovative 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with DIRECT SELECT lever on the steering column.

The new Mercedes-Benz R-Class models are now equipped with rear-wheel drive and a long wheelbase. Thanks to the reduction in weight and inherently lower frictional losses in the powertrain, the rear-wheel drive models return low fuel-consumption figures previously unseen in any Mercedes-Benz R-Class.

All 5+2-seater variants are also equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension with the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) as standard.
Complete range of equipment for the ultimate in comfort
All the Mercedes-Benz R-Class models feature new items of standard equipment that make automotive travel even more relaxing. For instance, the THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control featuring individually controlled front and rear temperatures, is equipped with a combination filter to further reduce the pollutants in the air inside the vehicle, while the spacious glove compartment now incorporates an AUX-IN connection for external audio or entertainment devices. On request, the interior can be enhanced even further with a two-tone colour scheme. In conjunction with a leather interior in beige or grey, areas such as the roof liner, pillar linings, steering wheel, door armrests, rear sidewalls and vehicle floor are in black to provide an attractive contrast.

In addition to the extensive standard equipment package, the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class offers numerous assistance systems that represent the pinnacle in handling comfort and safety, and back up the claim to leadership in this market segment. When not enjoying a full view of the surroundings through the panoramic sunroof, rear passengers of the Mercedes-Benz R 350 L can select their own on-board entertainment programme courtesy of the rear-seat entertainment system, while the electric sliding sunroof in the new Mercedes-Benz R 280 L provides excellent ventilation and the option to enjoy the outdoors.

Scientific studies carried out by the Daimler research department confirm the outstanding level of long-distance comfort provided by the new Mercedes-Benz R Class. During a detailed programme of scientific tests, driver stress measured on the basis of heart rate was much lower in the Mercedes-Benz R-Class than in comparable vehicles. This means that the strain on the driver is noticeably reduced, enabling him to concentrate more fully on the traffic and respond to critical situations with greater alertness. Mercedes-Benz has concerned itself with this important area, which is known as stress-relieving safety, for the last 25 years. It represents an important development aim, and has reached an outstanding level in all passenger cars bearing the Mercedes star.
State-of-the-art safety features such as PRE-SAFE® and NECK-PRO
The latest technology offers passengers in the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class the safety to be expected of a Mercedes-Benz. PRE-SAFE®, the multi-award-winning anticipatory protection system, detects critical handling situations and immediately springs into action to prepare occupants and vehicle alike for an imminent collision. Precautions include pulling the driver's and front passenger's seat-belts taut, adjusting the electrically adjustable front passenger seat with memory function to the optimum position and automatically closing the sliding sunroof. These preventive protection measures improve the seating position of the vehicle's occupants prior to impact, thereby enhancing the restraining effect of the seat belts and airbags.

Adaptive front airbags and front sidebags as well as windowbags can all be found on the standard specification list of the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class, and all passengers enjoy the added reassurance of belt tensioners and belt force limiters. Another Mercedes-Benz first for improving further the standards of occupant safety is NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints.
Equipment: valuable extras in package form
The electrical sunroof ensures a cooling supply of fresh air for the interior whilst letting in a pleasant amount of extra light. The efficient air-conditioning system makes long journeys aboard the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class all the more comfortable. The newly developed multi-zone THERMOTRONIC system is equipped with over a dozen sensors as well as an auxiliary booster blower. The system is able to faithfully maintain the temperatures set by the driver, the front passenger and the occupants in the rear.

“The new R-Class from Mercedes-Benz, reaffirms the role of Mercedes-Benz as the visionary and trendsetter amongst automotive brands. The unprecedented vehicle concept takes the acknowledged strengths of established vehicle categories, such as sporty saloon, estate, MPV and SUV, and fuses them to create a new car with a character all of its own – a car that is all about the three Ds: Design, Dimensions and Dynamism,” said Florian Mueller, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

In conclusion, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class is based not on a dream but on a vision derived from intensive market research. The result is a vehicle which combines space with adaptability, power and sportiness with premium, comfort, prestige and everyday practicality.
